Waldo Canyon Fire updates

The Waldo Canyon Fire (formerly called the Pyramid Mt. Fire) has now increased to 1,000 acres.

A Type 1 team from the federal government is taking over the mangement of the fire.

Authorities said the fire broke out around 12 p.m. although white smoke had been reported in the area the night before.

Mandatory evacuations continue for areas north of Highway 24 from Cascade to Waldo Canyon, Cedar Heights subdivision, west of 30th Street from Gateway (near Garden of the Gods) north to the Chuck Wagon area.

Voluntary evacuations are in effect from north of the Chuck Wagon area up to the Air Force Academy.

Garden of the Gods Park is closed.

Several air tankers and helicopters have been dropping fire retardant and water on the fire.

Fighterfighters are challenged by erratic winds and steep terrain.

Cascade, Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs firefighters have been working the fire along with crews from the Springer Fire near Lake George.

Red Cross shelters have been set up in the Woodland Park High School and Cheyenne Mt. High School, 1200 Cresta Rd.

Large Animals can be taken to the Norris Penrose Equestrian Center off of 8th Street in Colorado Springs at 1045 W. Rio Grande Street.

Cash donations are being accepted by the Pikes Peak Red Cross, the Humane Society and the Pikes Peak United Way.
