Pueblo, CO - On Monday April 1, Pueblo police officers were called to the Safeway store on Pueblo's Southside in regards to a theft in progress.
Upon officers arrival they contacted store security who informed the officers that he was watching a male suspect in his early 20's, later identified as 21-year-old Joseph Trujillo, stealing items.
Officers observed Trujillo selecting products off the shelves and hiding them in his jacket. When officer confronted the suspect, telling him he was under arrest, he became combative with the officers and refused to give them his hands to be placed into cuffs. Officers were forced to use a Taser on the suspect who continued to resist and refused to show the officers his hands. Officers were finally able to get the suspect restrained. A knife from the suspect was recovered. Trujillo and both officers were transported to the hospital for injuries. One of the officers sustained several abrasions, cuts and a fracture. Trujillo, who had an active arrest warrant for Failure to Appear, was booked into county jail for the warrant and also charged with Theft, Resisting Arrest and Second Degree Assault on a Peace Officer.
