Researchers say vaccine-like shots are showing promise in helping cocaine abusers fight their addiction. The same shots may also keep cocaine addicts from getting high.

The shots didn't work perfectly, but researchers say their limited success suggests the approach could be widely used to treat addiction within several years.

A director with the National Institute on Drug Abuse is calling this an "important study." She says the findings "clearly" show it's possible for a vaccine to interfere with cocaine's effect on the brain.

The study appears in this month's Archives of General Psychiatry.
