Update: Waldo Canyon Fire now 2,000 acres

The Waldo Canyon Fire is now at 2,000 acres with 0% containment. No structures have been reported damaged or destroyed and no injuries have been reported.

An 8 p.m. news conference revealed that 4 tankers a helicopter and air attack plane have been working the fire into the evening. No air support will be available at night and firefighters will maintain their positions for structure protection.

Erratic winds, hot temperatures, very low humidities and very rugged terrain have made it a difficult fire to fight so far.

Sunday, similar weather conditions are in the forecast.

Mandatory evacuations continue north of Highway 24 from Cascade to Waldo Canyon, Cedar Heights subdivision, and west of 30th from Gateway (Garden of Gods) northward to Chuck Wagon area including the Rampart Range Road area..then voluntary evacuations northward to the AFA. Mandatory evaucations are in effect until 8 o'clock Sunday night.

Garden of the Gods Park, Cave of the Winds, Cog Railway and Pikes Peak will all be closed Sunday.

Evacuation centers are open at Woodland Park High School and Cheyenne Mt. High School at 1200 Cresta Rd.

Large animals can be brought to the Norris Penrose Equestrian Center, 1045 W. Rio Grande Street off of 8th Street.
