UPDATE: smoke detectors save local family

Firefighters in Colorado Springs quickly put out a house fire this morning on Red Onion Way which is in the neighborhood of Vickers and Flintridge.

The call came in at about 5:50 a.m. Saturday morning. A family of 5 and their pets all made it out safely.

Firefighters believe the fire started on the outside of the house and then spread to the inside after it was driven by strong wind gusts.

The smoke detectors were working and are credited with waking up the family. The damage is reported to be relatively minor, but firefighters say the family will not be able to stay there tonight.


Firefighters now say the fire that started in a home on Red Onion Way is under control. 


Firefighters in Colorado Springs are on the scene of a house fire on Red Onion Way, in the area of Vickers and Flintridge. The call came in just before 6:00 a.m. Saturday with reports of "heavy fire" visible in several areas of the house.

There's no report yet of damages or injuries. We have a crew on the scene and will update you with new information as it becomes available.
