Colorado Springs Police and the Major Accidents Investigation Unit have reopened the southbound lanes of Powers Blvd at Galley Road following a lengthy investigation of a crash that occurred around 2:00 am Sunday. The accident occurred between two vehicles both heading South on Powers Blvd. Police say that a Volkswagen Golf was traveling southbound on Powers Blvd when another Volkswagen Rabbit rear-ended it.
The VW Golf spun off of the roadway, flipping over, and ending up on the grassy shoulder of the road on its top. The Rabbit also flipped over then righted itself ending up near the drive-thru of a Carl's Jr., restaurant. The driver of the VW Rabbit was identified as 18 year old Gian Leon, who was later arrested on suspicion of Driving under the Influence of Alcohol and Vehicular Assault due to serious bodily injury, a fractured knee, sustained by a 31 year old passenger of the VW Golf.
Leon was made to post bond at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center. He and the driver of the Golf sustained minor injuries. Powers Boulevard was closed completely for approximately four hours between Palmer Park Boulevard and Galley Road, then opened up to two through lanes of traffic for the ongoing crash investigation. Police were able to reopen the closed southbound lane at 9:00am upon completion of their investigation.
