Update: Safety concerns surface following apartment complex fire

Tenants at the Devonshire Square Apartments are questioning their safety following a fire Wednesday morning inside the complex.

Nine people were treated for injuries, three of whom had to be taken to the hospital.

Approximately 100 tenants at the complex at 2770 E. Uintah have been displaced and are staying with friends and family members this week.

News 5 learned there were no building fire alarms installed in the complex. The Colorado Springs Fire Department says because the complex was built back in 1971, it is exempt from having building alarms.

"It was not required by city ordinance back then," Deputy Fire Marshal Kris Cooper said.

About a decade later, fire alarm ordinances were created.

The complex did have smoke alarms installed in each of the units, but we haven't been able to confirm whether they went off during the fire.

"Maintenance and management ensured us they inspect those alarms every six months and have a log of that," Cooper said. "When we do a follow up next week, we will see that paperwork to verify that. We have no reason to believe that wouldn't be the case."

News 5 will let you know the results of that follow-up inspection.
