COLORADO SPRINGS- The investigation continues into reports that a newborn baby girl was abandoned near a dumpster at the Rosemont Shadow Mountain Apartments.
Police blocked off the dumpster where witnesses say the child was discovered, but could not tell us whether they baby was found inside the trash bin or next to it.
Authorities say there were conflicting witness reports as to where the child was found.
Police later discovered the baby had not been anywhere near the dumpster.
The newborn is expected to survive and was in stable condition when she arrived at Memorial Hospital Central.
"Why anybody would put a baby in a dumpster makes no sense," resident Whitney Schell said.
Police couldn't explain the situation either.
"We're just trying to understand this," Lt. Howard Black said.
Just before 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, police arrived to find a baby girl wrapped in a hospital gown.
"Honestly it makes me so sick that somebody would actually do that," resident Amy Digan said.
CSPD confirms they have made contact with the 17-year-old mother.
Her name has not been released at this time.
Police have not said whether any charges have been filed.
Apartment complex staff locked the lobby doors and did not answer phone calls Wednesday afternoon.
Crime scene investigators left the complex just before 10 p.m.
