Pueblo fire bosses say that the massive fire broke out just after 6 p.m. tonight in an empty building at 3rd St. and Court, downtown. The fire quickly spread to the Johnson Sport and Ski building next door, and then to four or five empty storefront businesses, including the old DHS Photograpy, and Denver Furniture.
Multiple units, involving more than 30 firefighters, five pumper trucks, a ladder truck and a pumper truck from the Pueblo airport were brought in to battle the blaze, which saw flames shooting 30 to 40 feet in to the air at the height of the fire.
By 9:30, most of the flames had been knocked down, but there remains hot spots and flareups in multiple locations, so firefighters were moving slowly and cautiously to try and gain the upper hand. The fire was being kept from spreading to adjacent blocks, and across alleyways.
Right now, no injuries have been reported, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Multiple streets in and around the fire are closed, and will remain closed for the next several hours.
Mutual aid units from Pueblo West have been brought in to help handle additional emergencies or medical calls.
