Update: Morse wins close race

Senate Majority Leader, Democrat John Morse defeated Republican challenger Owen Hill by a narrow margin of 13, 451 votes to 13,199.

The unofficial 252 vote difference is greater than 0.5 percent margin (67 votes) required to trigger an automatic recount. The margin is based on the highest number of votes cast in a contest, not the total votes cast in a race.

Nevertheless, El Paso County Republican Party communications director Kyle Fisk says the party would like to see a recall anyway.

"The real issue here is that all the ballots simply have not been counted and really at the end of the day what we want to make sure happens is that every valid vote counts," Fisk said.

He points out that provisional and absentee ballots have not yet been tallied in this race.

Either candidate has 24 days to request a recall.
