The Huerfano County Coroner says the man who died early Monday after he was shot by a police officer was shot twice in the stomach.
Armando Gallegos, 29, was shot during a domestic violence incident in Walsenburg Sunday night. According to a statement released Monday morning by the Police Department, two officers responded to a call on Stacy Drive around 9:30 Sunday night.
One officer helped young children who were crawling out a front window, the other officer went to the back of the house and observed a domestic altercation. He reported the man had a weapon, but the statement did not say what kind of weapon. That officer fired his weapon. Gallegos was taken to a hospital and died about three hours later.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation was called in to process the scene and investigate. The officer has not been identified. He is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
