Update: All lanes of I-25 have reopened after a tanker truck crash Wednesday.
The crash happened at Baptist Road in El Paso County before noon.
I-25 is closed in both directions because of a rollover crash involving a gasoline tanker truck. Northbound traffic is exiting the interstate at North Gate, while southbound traffic is exiting at Baptist Road. Alternate route: Highway 83.
Traffic is backed up for miles--and it's getting worse. The congestion has resulted in more crashes, both north and south of Baptist Road. Emergency crews are having a tough time getting through the mess.
This all started when when a southbound tanker truck swerved to miss traffic and rolled off the road. The huge tank ripped open, spilling at least 3,500 gallons of gas. Due to the danger of explosion, the interstate was closed.
New information: Hazmat crews at the scene are neutralizing the spilled fuel, and transferring the gas remaining in the tanker to another truck. A full cleanup of soil is expected to take days.
The truck driver was not injured. He is expected to be ticketed.
