Faculty researchers at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs will study the role of online informal communication in disasters as part of a $750,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.
The grant is shared with the University of California Irvine.
Among the topics to be studied is the role of micro blogging sites such as Twitter.
The principal UCCS investigator will be Jeannette Sutton, senior research associate, UCCS Trauma, Health and Hazards Center. "This project aims to study the dynamics of information exchange during and following emergency situations from official sources and members of the public at large," Sutton said. "By understanding this process, we hope to improve emergency communication and to save lives."
