U.S. Rugby team hits Colorado Springs

There's a new sport coming to the 2016 Olympics, as rugby has been added as a Summer Games sport, and the U.S. Women's Rugby team was showcased in Colorado Springs this past weekend.

Forty three of the best players in the country practiced at Colorado College, UCCS, and the Air Force academy over the weekend as rugby continues to be one of the fastest growing sports in America.

Team USA is preparing for Tour of Italy in November and then the Rugby Sevens World Cup next Summer.

National coach Pete Steinberg says that Colorado is fertile ground for up-and-coming rugby players.

"The growth that we see in high school rugby in Colorado and also in college rugby at a place like Colorado College that has a tremendous girls high school program is what's going to lead us to success in the Olympics," said Steinberg. "The sooner players pick up the game, the better players they are and the more competitive we will be."

The USA won the first official Women's Rugby World Cup in 1991 and will be a contender for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
