A small plane crashed at the Colorado Springs Airport at noon today, killing both people aboard.
The pilot missed his approach to the runway in heavy fog, crashed, and the plane burst into flames. The Mooney M20E was registered to Martin Anthony Riggin of Rapid City, South Dakota. The names of the people aboard the plane have not been released, until relatives are notified of the crash. The plane took off from Rapid City at 9:18 MST and crashed at 12:01 p.m.
This is a file photo of the plane that crashed.
The airport was completely shut down for about two hours. One runway has now reopened, and some flights are landing and departing. However, fog is still so thick that many flights have been canceled. Some passengers are being bused to Denver International Airport. Airlines are struggling to rebook passengers on other flights just three days before Christmas. Many flights are already booked solid.
