Two killed & 3 injured by crash on Pikes Peak

COLORADO SPRINGS - Two people have died after they were hit from behind while trying to push a stalled minivan out of traffic Monday afternoon. The accident happened at around 4:00 p.m. in the 2500 Block of Pikes Peak Avenue just east of the intersection with Parkside Drive.

Police officers say there were three people trying to push the Ford Windstar from the eastbound left lane of Pikes Peak when a driver in a maroon Dodge Durango didn't realize the van had stalled was unable to stop.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene. The second died after being taken in an ambulance to the hospital. The third person and two other passengers in the van suffered moderate injuries. The driver of the Durango was not injured.

Officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department Major Accident Unit are investigating the crash. Pikes Peak is temporarily closed in both directions at Parkside.
