Troopers suspect drugs involved in deadly head on crash

FREMONT COUNTY - A 41 year old Cotopaxi woman died following a head on collision on US Hwy 50 in Fremont County. The accident happened at around 12:15 p.m. Thursday approximately 3 miles east of the town of Howard.

According to the Colorado State Patrol Technician Tim Ortiz, the driver of a 2011 Chevrolet was driving westbound in the eastbound lane of Hwy 50 when it collided head-on with a 1985 Subaru.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 60-year old William Shaffer of North Liberty Iowa, was wearing his seatbelt and was taken to The Heart of the Rockies Medical Center in Salida with minor injuries.

The driver of the Subaru was not wearing her seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a news release, Ortiz indicated that drugs are suspected as a contributing factor in the accident. However, no indication was given as to which party may have been using the drugs.
