Trooper injured in high speed chase, expected to make full recovery

Update: Colorado State Trooper Bellamann Hee is out of surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, according to Colorado State Patrol.  Trooper Hee was hit by the fleeing vehicle while trying to lay down Stop Sticks in its path.

A 4-year-old Colorado boy is safe following a terrifying ordeal that began with a carjacking in Longmont, Colorado Wednesday morning.

It began when a man took an SUV left running in the parking lot of a gas station. The boy had been left in the backseat while his mother went in to pay.

After a nearly 30-minute high speed chase the driver forced another minivan to the side of the road, then took that vehicle, leaving the boy behind.

While driving the second vehicle the driver struck and seriously injured a Colorado State Trooper, identified as Trooper Bellamann Hee, on the side of the Interstate, but kept going. Trooper Hee sustained serious injuries and required surgery, but is expected to live.
