TRINIDAD, Colo. (AP) - The Trinidad schools superintendent says he has asked school officials and students to suggest a new look for the district's logo, which depicts its mascot of a miner.
The town has a strong mining heritage. The Chronicle-News
reports someone posted a message on Facebook suggesting that new Superintendent Manuel Rodriguez wanted to change the mascot outright.
Rodriguez said Monday that furor over the rumors is distracting from the district's job of improving student achievement.
He says he simply wants to look for miners in different poses as the district prepares to upgrade its website. He says there is no consistent logo now. The logo on Trinidad High School's gym shows a miner holding a pick and explosives. The image on the district's website has the miner swinging a pick.
