A jury trial set for Monday at the Huerfano County Courthouse in Walsenburg has been cancelled after large sections of rock broke loose from the front of the courthouse tower. Chief Judge Claude Appel cancelled the trial out of concern for public safety.

A photograph provided by the Colorado Judicial Department shows a pile of debris resting on the eve of the courthouse roof.

"Until we have an opportunity to evaluate the structural integrity of the Courthouse, I do not believe we should risk the safety and security of the public and our staff," Chief Judge Appel said.

Huerfano County residents who had received jury summons do not need to appear at the courthouse. A statement released Saturday by the state judicial department say the trial has been moved to Trinidad.

The Court and Huerfano County officials are working to find a suitable temporary location.
