A tortoise is missing from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Zoo officials believe it was taken by a guest yesterday afternoon from its exhibit in an area called "The Loft."
The tortoise, named Butti, is an Indian Star Tortoise and about the size of a grapefruit. Staff last saw him around 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. They say left the area for 15 minutes and when they came back he was gone.
Keepers say Butti is older and has some health problems, and that he needs to be returned for his safety, "Were really very concerned with him not being here that he's not going to get not only the vet care he needs, but also the dietary and light and heat and temperature conditions that he needs," explains keeper Ashley Young.
Butti has a brother named Tutti, keepers say the two usually follow each other around but since Butti went missing, Tutti has been burying himself in the mulch in his display; something he doesn't typically do.
"The Loft" is a unique area of the zoo where you can get up close to the animals. The zoo says they have no plans to change that, but they are looking at adding more surveillance.
If you have any information about Butti's disappearance you're asked to call the zoo at 719-633-9925, extension 140. The zoo says they don't plan on pressing charge, they just want Butti back.
