Toddlers and TV

Television and other electronic screens can have a hypnotizing effect on kids, and are used by many parents as a distraction, but a new study suggests this strategy may have long-lasting side effects.

Some babies are born a little more temperamental than others and find it more difficult to calm down or to transition from playtime to bedtime.

Many parents pacify toddler tantrums that arise in these situations with television screens.

"I certainly have patients where they say 'this is the only thing that calms him down,'" said Dr. Jenny Radesky of the Boston Medical Center.

The new study in question maintains that while a television set's bright lights may seem to focus the baby's attention; they actually run the risk of over-stimulating kids as well.
