A small group of organizers is promising a bigger and better downtown New Year's Eve celebration for Colorado Springs than any other in recent memory. It will feature four hot air balloons rising at midnight, three huge video screens provided by Ultimate Electronics in Thornton, live music, fireworks from the summit of Pikes Peak set off by the AdAmAn Club, and plenty of food and entertainment.
Retired Air Force Maj. Charles Prignano began spearheading an effort in April to organize a Times Square-style New Year's Eve celebration for downtown Colorado Springs in hopes of attracting live national, or even global New Year's Eve television coverage to the oft-forgotten Mountain Time Zone. "They fly over us as if we don't exist," said Prignano. "They go on to Las Vegas and Los Angeles. This year, we're going to turn the tables on them. We're going to bring Times Square to Colorado Springs."
Colorado Springs' New Year's Eve 2011 will be held at the Palmer Center, located between the Wells Fargo Tower, Antlers Hilton, and 1st Bank Tower along Cascade Avenue. The outdoor portion of the event will be free to the public. Tickets for the Gala New Year's Eve Ball inside the Antlers Hilton range between $36 to $70 for civilians and $18 to $35 for uniformed military personnel. Tickets will go on sale November 15 via TicketsWest. Prignano says all proceeds from the Gala Ball and from sponsors, vendors, contributions, and donations will benefit the military charity USA Cares. Prignano says he has funded most of the endeavor out-of-pocket. "What I've put in myself is $15,000 initially," Prignano said, "and we've still got a couple thousand to go." He says he's hoping for at least 5,000 people to attend.
Ed Bircham of Bircham's Office Products, the event's main sponsor, says the event is an opportunity for Colorado Springs to emerge from a year of mainly negative national publicity into a new year and a new opportunity for positive publicity. "We've taken some hard knocks this year," Bircham said, "so we want to put Colorado Springs in a positive light."
