Thursday Weather: Storms This Afternoon

New data this morning suggests moisture is increasing faster than expected. Add a cold front to that, which will slowly move through Southern Colorado today, and the stage is set for scattered showers and thunderstorms to fire this afternoon.

The moisture content is still rather high near the ground with plenty of humidity to support the storms this afternoon. Moisture above the ground is lacking, though the air aloft is not as dry as yesterday. The driest air is sliding to our east. That suggests that while storms will be around this afternoon, they likely will not be widespread and there will be areas that miss the rain.

The hour-by-hour breakdown holds plenty of clouds over Southern Colorado this morning, but breaks in the clouds will mean some sun peeking through. By noon, temperatures will be in the 70's and 80's with a mix of sun and clouds. Showers and storms begin forming in the mountains between noon and 2 PM and then move out of the mountains from 2 PM to 4 PM and onward to the Plains by 5 PM.

Tomorrow the moisture looks to back off temporarily, so thunderstorms will be fewer and temperatures will be warmer. The moisture comes back on Sunday, marking a return of showers and thunderstorms that likely will linger through Wednesday.
