ThunderWolf baseball squad eighth in debut of NCAA regional rankings

INDIANAPOLIS (GoThunderWolves.com - Apr. 24, 2014) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team appears in the No. 8 spot of the initial NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings, which were announced by the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee this week.

Those rankings, which will be updated one each of the next two Wednesdays before the final selection announcement is made on May 11, will determine the seeding and at-large selections for the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Tournament.

The Pack, who sport a 23-8 overall and in-region record, are one of three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams in the rankings. Their weekend opponent -New Mexico Highlands is ranked seventh while RMAC-leading Colorado Mesa is first in the ranking and in position to host the 6-team regional tournament, which will be held May 15-18.

The Mavericks, who are 31-8 overall and 30-6 in in-region games are followed by West Texas A&M, a team the ThunderWolves defeated 2-1 in a season-opening series back in February.

Meanwhile, four other Texas schools occupy the third through sixth spots. Texas A&M-Kingsville, which hosted last year's regional tournament that the Pack qualified for after winning the RMAC Tournament title and the conference's automatic berth, is ranked third while St. Edward's and St. Mary's of the Heartland Conference are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

Angelo State, which hails from the Lone Star Conference as does West Texas A&M and Kingsville, is ranked sixth ahead of New Mexico Highlands, which has a 25-16 Division II and in-region record heading into this weekend's 4-game series in Pueblo.

That series begins Friday at 7:05 p.m. with the ThunderWolves' annual Pack the Park game at Runyon Field. The series then moves on to the CSU-Pueblo campus for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at 1 p.m. followed by a single Sunday afternoon game, slated for noon. That game will be the final home game of the season for the ThunderWolves, who wrap up the regular season at Adams State with a 4-game series from May 1-3.

The 4-team RMAC Tournament, which will be hosted by the top team at the end of the regular season standings, will be held May 8-10.
