Thunderstorm halts firefighting efforts near Penrose

FREMONT COUNTY - Tuesday's thunderstorms forced firefighters to temporarily abandon their efforts to put out a small fire near Penrose.  The fire, which was started by a lightning strike Monday afternoon, is burning near the top of a ridge-line south of the second tunnel on the east side of Phantom Canyon Road.  Firefighters hiked up to the fire Tuesday.

According to the United States Bureau of Land Management, the fire has been limited to smoldering and creeping in dead and down trees, and is one-quarter acre in size.

The fire is not threatening any structures or private land.

The fire has been named the Eightmile Fire.
