A new technology to keep you safe will soon be coming to El Paso and Teller Counties. The 911 Authority is working toward technology that will allow you to text 911 in an emergency.
Public Education Officer, Ben Bills, says their system is ready to start receiving texts, but they're still working with the four major wireless carriers to make it a reality. He says it's important to "call when you can, and text when you can't." Texting 911 should only be used when talking on the phone is a threat to your safety.
"The example of somebody is in your house, and you'd give away your position by getting on the phone and talking to us, that may be a text situation," Bills says.
Calling will always be the fastest way to reach 911. Again, the text system isn't active yet. Bills anticipates it to be ready in about two months.
