Testing for dangerous diseases

You could say the mouth is the window to your health. It can show signs of disease or infection before they're visible anywhere else. So why not take the extra steps to make sure you're staying healthy.

It's that reasoning that prompted one Colorado Springs dentist to start using Oral DNA tests that could not only help you keep your teeth longer, but help steer you clear of dangerous diseases. Two in particular, help patients battling things like Periodontal disease and bacterial infections

"It will give us 2 specific diagnostic criteria," says Dr. Fred Guerra of Guerra Dental. "One, the types and species of bacteria that are in their mouth... and {a}separate test that comes with that, will also give their genetic susceptibility to periodontal disease"

Those results will help guide and dictate any future treatment.

"If they have inflammation, bleeding, pain in the gums, receding gums, we want to be able to offer them a tailored therapeutic approach."

Dr. Guerra is also offering a DNA test that'll not only tell a patient if Oral HPV is present and what kind it is, but it'll also let people know if they're genetically at risk.

"Oral HPV related cancers are probably the most prevalent cancer right now discovered in the mouth."

Anyone can request the Oral HPV test. All Oral DNA tests require a quick swishing the mouth with a saline solution before the mixture is sent off for testing.
