Telluride considers fee for plastic grocery bags

Activists are asking the southwest Colorado resort town of Telluride to require grocery stores to charge customers 25 cents for each single-use plastic bag.

Town Council members reacted favorably to the idea at a work session last week and directed town staff to draft an ordinance.

The idea was proposed by a group including environmentalist David Allen, local filmmaker Suzan Beraza and Town Council members Chris Myers and Brian Werner. Allen unsuccessfully proposed a ban on plastic bags two years ago. Beraza made a film called "Bag It" about the effects of plastic.

Bob Harnish, general manager of Village Market grocery story, says the ordinance would create an unfair burden on food stores. He says a recycling program is a better idea.
