Teen convicted of manslaughter in NY hate crime

A Long Island teenager has been convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime in the stabbing death of an Ecuadorean immigrant. The case cast a national spotlight on bias crimes against Hispanics.

Jurors also decided on Monday, their fourth day of deliberations, to acquit 19-year-old Jeffrey Conroy of murder in the November 2008 killing of Marcelo Lucero.

Conroy was implicated along with six others in the killing, but was the only one charged with murder. Four others have pleaded guilty to hate crime-related charges; two are awaiting trial.

Lucero's death prompted outrage and protests in the Hispanic community and a federal investigation into bias crimes in the area.
