This month's teachers first recipient is Rhonda Conn-Parent the art teacher at Steele Elementary in Colorado Springs. Her reaction to the recognition offers evidence of why she was nominated for the award. She is excited about it because it will bring attention to the work of her students.
She teaches all the students at Steele Elementary. They are kids from age five up to 12. "Mrs.Conn-Parent is one in a million. She's enthusiastic, energetic, one of the most creative people I've ever known," says Principal, Georganne Barnes. The principal says she also knows the kids names at something about each one of them.
Mrs. Conn-Parent is a hands-on teacher making sure the kids build a foundation with art concepts and techniques. Most all she wants them to see that intelligence is complimented by creativity. "Exercising that part of your brain that allows you to imagine and explore and take the risk because it is risky and it takes a lot of courage to create," said Conn-Parent.
