Teacher tenure bill up for first vote at Capitol

A proposal to tie teacher tenure to student performance faces its first vote at the state Capitol.
The Senate Education Committee is set to hold a hearing on the bill Wednesday and decide whether to pass it on to the full Senate.
Only teachers whose students show improvement in the classroom would be able to earn and keep job protections. Tenure for principals would also be linked to student performance and whether they're supporting teachers.
Teachers have been lobbying lawmakers on the bill. They question how instructors in subject areas or grade levels that aren't subject to standardized tests can be fairly evaluated.
A panel appointed by Gov. Bill Ritter is supposed to work out the details about exactly how teachers will be evaluated.
