A former coach and teacher at Fountain Fort Carson High School was sentenced to 10 years of intensive probation Tuesday with a mandatory 5 years to be served at community corrections for having sex with a 17-year-old student last year.
The judge issued the sentence to Anthony Ribaudo, 37, despite hearing letters read from both the victim and her mother requesting a lighter penalty. Ribaudo pleaded guilty in February to a charge of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.
The intercourse was said to be consensual and took place on two occasions, including once at the school. The victim's mother pointed out in her letter that the incident took place approximately two weeks before her daughter's 18th birthday, and said despite her initial anger over the incident that had forgiven Mr. Ribaudo.
The victim stated in her letter that Ribaudo is not a bad person, did not harm her and that she wasn't taken advantage of. Ribaudo wept as he made apologies to his victim, her family, his family and the school for what he called a selfish act. He will be required to register as a sex offender and will not be able to work in education again.
