Littleton school teacher Dr. David Benke is being called a hero for stepping in when a man shot two children Tuesday at his school. Witnesses say the 7th grade math teacher Benke tackled the gunman first and other teachers piled on top of him.

A girl and boy were shot outside Deer Creek Middle School as school was being let out. The school is just three miles from Columbine High School. Sheriff's investigators said both should recover from their injuries.

Hundreds of students were going home and on buses outside the school when the shots were fired.

Right now, there's no word on the motive behind the shootings.

Both Deer Creek Middle School and nearby Stony Creek Elementary School will be closed, Wednesday, Feb. 24. Counselors will be available at Stony Creek, 7203 Everett St. Littleton to work with any students who need assistance.
