TD Bank is thanking its customers in a remarkable way.
As part of its "TD Thanks You" marketing campaign, TD Canada Trust distributed a $20 thank-you gift to 30,000 customers. But a few more were in store for a much bigger surprise.
Four branches in Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary set up special ATMs which, on this particular Friday, were transformed into "Automated Thanking Machines." Bank employees pre-selected more than a dozen regular customers at their local branches who stood out as deserving of special recognition.
The bank then asked these customers to come in as part of a focus group for a new ATM design. Much to their surprise, when they approached the ATM, it started speaking to them and even knew their names.
"They were literally blown away," said Chris Stamper, TD's senior vice president of corporate marketing.
Some customers got bonus cash, including one lucky little boy, while others received gifts that didn't fit in the money slot. A Toronto Blue Jays fan picked up team swag and was then greeted by the Jays' Jose Bautista, who told him he'd be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at an upcoming game.
One mom was surprised with college money for her two sons and a trip to Disneyland. "I've never been able to take my kids anywhere," she said, holding back tears.
And perhaps the most touching of all - a woman named Dorothy was given tickets to Trinidad to visit her daughter who has cancer and is recovering from surgery.
The video of the customers' reactions is a gift to all those who watch it, and the campaign seems to be paying off for TD. The video has already been viewed nearly 4 million times on YouTube.
