Tainted water found near Colorado mine

Water near a western Colorado mine has been found to be contaminated.
The Denver Post reports that the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has ordered U.S. Energy Corp. to clean up contamination at the Mount Emmons mine near Crested Butte. State health inspectors found cadmium, aluminum, zinc and other contamination at levels up to 32 times higher than water-quality standards.
Colorado mining regulators already have granted U.S. Energy a prospecting permit to work one of the world's largest and purest known deposits of molybdenum.
Crested Butte Mayor Leah Williams has urged the state not to allow U.S. Energy further prospecting until the site is cleaned up.
Crested Butte's drinking water isn't affected.
