Two young people went all out for an assignment in a photo club. It ended with their arrest on menacing and false reporting charges.
Witnesses reported two suspicious men pouring white powder onto a U.S. Postal Service drop box at 24th and Grand Avenue in Pueblo. Police cordoned off both Grand and 24th for a block in each direction and evacuated residents from the area.
The substance turned out to be powdered sugar. The suspects turned themselves in a couple of hours later when they realized they were the cause of the uproar. One of them had dressed up in a trench coat, a scarf and a gas mask. As he dumped the sugar, the other took the pictures.
"I don't know exactly what the cost of this hoax would be, but you got to consider all the police officers out here, all the firemen, all the investigators, everybody's pay and everything, all the equipment, it's got to be a very very expensive hoax," said Captain Dayton Robinson of the Pueblo Police Department.
The suspects are Jonathon Holden, 24 and Steven Atencio, 20. According to Detective Mark Bravo the two wanted to enter a contest that required them to take a photo that included a mailbox. He said he saw one of the pictures and it was quite good.
