A Colorado Springs Woman was so violently sexually assaulted last month that even seasoned police officers call the attack horrific. Five men, all Iraqi nationals, are in custody in connection with the crime, and one of them appeared previously in a News 5 special report.
The assault happened sometime after 1:30 a.m. on July 21 at the Wildridge Apartments on Gold Rush Lane. The victim called 911 later that morning and when officers arrived they reported seeing a significant amount of blood thought the apartment.
"I would tell you that this is one of the most horrific sexual assault crimes I've seen in my career as a police officer," said Lt. Howard Black.
The victim told investigators she had gone for a walk and stopped to check her mailbox when she heard a disturbance. She saw two groups of men who appeared angry and looked as if they wanted to hurt each other and chose to stand between them in an attempt to calm them down.
She was later invited into an apartment and the last thing she remembered was drinking what she thought was lemonade.
Sarmad Fadhi Mohammed, 26, Jasim Mohammed Hassin Ramadon, 22, Mustafa Sataar Al Feraji, Ali Mohammed Hasan Al Juboori, and Yasir Jabbar Jasim are all in custody in connection with the crime.
"In our preliminary investigation, we believe that all five were knowingly a part of this criminal episode," Lt. Black added.
Four of the suspect were arrested monday, and one has already been charged. Jasim Ramadon is awaiting trial on 21 counts of sexual assault, crimes of violence and weapons charges.
It's a sharp contrast to the stories of heroism told to News 5 a few months ago by soldiers who helped Ramadon emigrate to the US.
Ramadon is the son of one of Saddam Hussein's top generals. He says he ran away after his father ordered him to kill Americans. Ramadon credited with helping turn over 40 of Saddam's top men including his father.
For someone who resisted violence earlier in life, it begs the question, what could have changed in Ramadon or any of the five suspects to cause them to carry out such an attack.
