PHOENIX (AP) - A man being held on attempted murder and robbery charges at an Arizona jail has vanished, and authorities say it's unclear if he escaped or is hiding somewhere in the sprawling facility.

Maricopa County authorities say they've launched a manhunt for 26-year-old Adan Orduno Jr., who Sheriff Joe Arpaio described as a violent "troublemaker."

They're also searching approximately 600,000-square-foot jail, which also contains America's self-proclaimed toughest sheriff's famous "tent city" lockup for minor offenders.

Sheriff's spokesman Officer Christopher Hegstrom says Orduno was being housed in the jail's psychiatric unit and was discovered missing just before 9 a.m. Sunday.

Arpaio tells the Arizona Republic it's unclear if Orduno escaped or is hiding at the south Phoenix facility. The jail has been placed on lockdown.
