Suspect in child shooting to appear in court

PUEBLO - The man arrested on a felony child abuse charge in connection with the shooting of a three year old girl in Pueblo is expected to appear before a judge this afternoon. Adrian Michael Chavez, 22, is being held on $200,000 bond at the Pueblo County Jail on a charge of Child Abuse - Negligently Causing Serious Bodily Injury, a Class 4 Felony.

Officers with the Pueblo Police Department arrested Chavez Monday afternoon after he reportedly fled the sceen of the shooting at a home in the 3200 block of Colfax Avenue. The police believe a 9 year old boy got a hold of Chavez's loaded handgun and knew how to handle the weapon from playing video games.

A five year old boy later picked up the gun, pointed it at the girl and pulled the trigger. She was flown to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs for treatment where she was last reported to be in critical but stable condition. The gun was fired just once and the bullet entered and exited without breaking any bones.
