Styrofoam robots plan invasion of university art gallery

COLORADO SPRINGS - An invading force of styrofoam robots are planning their attack on the Galleries of Contemporary Art at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

The art exhibit "Styroboto: nothing comes from nothing" by contemporary artist Michael Salter will open next Thursday with a public reception from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Salter describes himself as an obsessive observer who searches through "the avalanche of mass media and corporate branding to find poignant, absurd and baffling pieces" for his work. Salter's art combines various disciplines including product and toy design, kinetic sculpture, logotypes, animation, and signage.

He is currently an associate professor of digital arts/new media at the University of Oregon and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally.

The gallery has collected donations of Styrofoam and Styrene packing material for the creation of his newest project. Salter will be in residence on the UCCS campus this month to assemble his latest work.

The Galleries of Contemporary Art are open Wednesday through Saturday from noon until 5:00 p.m. and by appointment. The Styrobot exhibit will be on display from January 24 - March 24 and is free and open to the public.
