Serious complications after bariatric surgery appear to be low, according to a new study from the University of Michigan.

Researchers there analyzed data on more than 15,000 patients. Overall, about 7-percent of patients who underwent weight-loss surgery like gastric bypass had complications, most of which were minor. Bariatric surgery has become the second most common abdominal operation in the USA.

The study involved 25 hospitals, 62 surgeons and 15,275 patients in Michigan.

The study was published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.
