A new computer model suggests most morbidly obese adults can extend their life span by undergoing bariatric surgery. Roughly 5 percent of the U.S. population is morbidly obese, meaning they have a BMI of 40 or higher. According to the new model, a 42 year-old woman could gain three years of life after undergoing bypass surgery. A 44 year-old man could gain 2 and-a-half years.
More studies are needed to see how other factors, like diabetes, impact the risk-to-benefit ratio.
The model used data from 400,000 individuals to calculate risk of death from obesity.
