Studies show Facebook can cause you to pack on the pounds

Is Facebook causing you to pack on the pounds? Multiple studies say yes. On the flip side, the social media site could be slimming down your bank account.

"Of course it does," says Gil Datz, Owner of Uzu Media. "If you combine [Facebook] with not eating well, not exercising, not keeping up with your normal life because you all of a sudden have this new online life."

He says it isn't just the sedentary lifestyle, but Facebook can play tricks on your brain.

"You can keep up an illusion of how you feel about yourself by not updating what's going on with you," says Datz.

That means if you've gained 15 pounds since you last uploaded a photo of yourself, you may not fully believe the weight gain.

Experts say Facebook can also hurt your wallet -- especially when your friends are posting photos of their new designer handbag or posing in front of an expensive, new boat. It can make you feel like you need to make the same purchases.

However, Uzu Media says to take these studies with a grain of salt.

"They come and go," says Braden Walker, Co-founder. "People will blame their problems on one fad or another... today it's Facebook, tomorrow it could be something completely different."
