Homes are flooded and drivers were stranded in parts of South Florida as a wet storm system from the Gulf headed north with snow forecast along much of the Atlantic seaboard.

Winter storm warnings were issued Friday from the Carolinas and far eastern Tennessee to New Jersey ahead of forecast snow across the Mid-Atlantic. Parts of western and central Virginia could get up to 18 inches of snow this weekend.

Water rose knee-deep in downtown Miami and more than a foot in Hollywood, 20 miles north. Near Hollywood, a fire truck responding to a call reportedly stalled in rising water.

The National Weather Service predicts thunderstorms Friday morning along the Florida Atlantic coast and a potential for tornados and damaging wind gusts.
