Steering clear of the most common fitness injuries

Spring is here, bathing suit season is around the corner, and I know a lot of you are just itching to get out and get fit. But before you hit the gym or the pavement, you'll want to know how to steer clear of the most common fitness injuries. 

"Guys are famous for 'well i'm in the gym and I have to bench press that 200 pounds. {but} if you haven't done that in a while, you probably need to scale it down" says phsyical therapist Joe Ruzich with Southern Colorado Clinic.

Most people know the benefits of exercise, but many people begin a program only to have it interrupted by an injury. Ruzich says spring and summer months bring with them new patients with new pains.

One of the most common-shoulder injuries.

"Racket sports, throwing sports, things like that, golf even."

Knee cap injuries, ACL sprains, shin splints; all of which can be prevented.

"Slow it down, don't bite off more than you can chew."

A 20 minute work out can also do the trick. But instead of those static stretches- experts say to include balance, agility, plyometric and strength exercises.

That can lessen the chances of permanent damage by almost 50 percent.
