As you gear up for your next hike or walk through the woods, you're going to want to be on the look out for ticks.
The tiny parasite, which averages around 2 centimeters in size, carries a host of diseases, including Lyme disease, and can make you extremely ill if bitten.
If you find a tick- Dr. Chris Wilson with Southern Colorado Clinic says old wives tales like twisting, burning, or pouring alcohol on the tick don't work.
"The recommendation really is, is to use fine forceps or tweezers and actually get down to the head and just gently pull it away and getting the whole thing out."
If you get bit, Dr. Wilson says the symptoms are flu- like, with a fever and chills, body aches, and skin rashes.
To avoid ticks, you'll want to wear light colored clothing, buy bug spay repellents that contain 20 percent deet, or spray your clothes with chemical permethrin.
