State Sen. Steve King charged with 3 felonies

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Republican state Sen. Steve King is facing three felony charges alleging he defrauded two former employers out of thousands of dollars.

King, a longtime resident of western Colorado's Grand Valley, was issued a summons Wednesday on felony counts of embezzlement of public property, forgery and theft. He also was charged with misdemeanor counts of forgery and official misconduct.

The complaint alleges King committed crimes against the Mesa County Sheriff's Office and Colorado Mesa University between July 2013 and December. In the theft count, King is accused of defrauding the sheriff's office and CMU of between $2,000 and $5,000.

No affidavit explaining the basis for the charges was filed, and King couldn't be reached for comment.

King's problems began when allegations surfaced that he falsified a timecard at the sheriff's office while working there part-time.
