Police used tear gas to flush a burglary suspect out of a home in the 3900 block of Surrey Lane in Colorado Springs Friday night. Colorado Springs Police said they received a call about a burglary around 6:00pm. When police arrived, a man had barricaded himself inside of the home with a large machete.
Police said there were people inside of the home at the time, but they were able to exit the home without injury. CSPD told News 5 that the suspect knew the homeowners, but aren't saying how. The suspect remained inside of the home for several hours while police attempted to negotiate with him.
A reverse 911 call went out to the neighborhood at 7:00pm notifying residents to stay indoors until the situation was safe. CSPD SWAT also had contact with the suspect and attempted to negotiate with him.
When those negotiations failed, CSPD used tear gas to flush the suspect out of the home just after 10:00pm. About 20 to 30 seconds later the suspect exited the home with his hands up, and then officers arrested him.
Police said there were no injuries during the incident. The suspect will likely face felony charges for first degree burglary, among others.
