Many children rely on school not just for an education but also for a free or reduced-cost meal. With school soon out for the summer, food banks and hunger organizations are stepping in.
Stamp Out Hunger is one of those events. On Saturday, simply leave a bag of food out by your mailbox and a letter carrier will collect it to be donated.
Care and Share is helping out by distributing donations to people in need.
"We know hunger never takes a holiday and that means we're here all year long helping serve the southern Colorado community," says Shannon Coker, marketing and communications director with Care and Share.
She says one in five children in southern Colorado are food insecure.
If you are not able to donate on Saturday, Care and Share accepts donations Monday through Friday all year long.
They say canned protein, cereals, soups, and their personal favorite, peanut butter, are items that are most in need.
